Dis-Chem Pharmacies Limited is inviting applications for a Pharmacist Assistant Post Basic Qualified (PBQ) position at its Benmore Gardens store in Sandton, Gauteng. This is a permanent opportunity within the Dispensary Category and Pharmacy business unit, suited to a qualified and professionally registered Pharmacist Assistant who can support the safe and accurate dispensing of medication while providing knowledgeable service to patients and healthcare professionals. The successful candidate will work under the direct personal supervision of a pharmacist when performing duties that require pharmacist oversight and will contribute to dispensing, customer service, administration, stock control and general pharmacy operations. The role carries significant responsibility within the pharmacy environment and requires strict adherence to South African Pharmacy Council requirements, Dis-Chem policies and approved Standard Operating Procedures. The successful applicant will assist with prescription processing, medication picking, packing and labelling, patient instructions and the controlled handling of medicines within the scope of the pharmacist assistant’s registration. Strong attention to detail will be essential because the role involves working with prescription information, patient details, medical scheme requirements and medication records. Candidates should also be comfortable using pharmacy and computer systems, including Unisolv, SAP and E-Scripting where applicable.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform pharmacist assistant duties within the legal scope of practice and under the direct personal supervision of a pharmacist where required.
- Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines and scheduled substances in accordance with applicable requirements.
- Assist with the compounding, manipulation or preparation of non-sterile or sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Assist with the manufacturing of medicines or scheduled substances according to approved procedures where applicable.
- Assist with the re-packaging of medicine.
- Support the distribution and control of Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines and scheduled substances.
- Assist with ordering medicines and scheduled substances up to and including Schedule 5 according to authorised instructions.
- Read and prepare prescriptions following the pharmacist’s interpretation and evaluation.
- Select, manipulate or compound medicines and label and supply them in appropriate containers under the required pharmacist supervision.
- Provide patients with appropriate instructions regarding the correct use of medicines supplied.
- Provide information that promotes health and supports informed medicine use.
- Accurately interpret prescriptions and perform duties professionally, responsibly and within South African Pharmacy Council requirements.
- Capture prescription details accurately and verify patient information on the pharmacy system.
- Accurately pick, pack and label medication while remaining alert to common dosages and important drug interactions.
- Ensure prescriptions entered into the system are checked for accuracy and signed off by a pharmacist.
- Keep up to date with changes in medical scheme procedures and requirements affecting dispensing and claims.
- Advise and assist patients at the dispensary, self-medication counter and front shop.
- Follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports and appointments as requested by the Dispensary Manager.
- Explain medical aid costs and relevant information to patients.
- Follow through on commitments made to customers.
- Process the paperwork required for accurate submission of medical scheme claims.
- Correct prescription errors or rejected scripts in line with applicable procedures.
- Ensure the required authorisation of chronic, HIV and oncology medication.
- Maintain accurate customer profiles on the system.
- Merge customer profiles locally and ensure Vexall is notified where central profile merging is required.
- Review messages on customer profiles and take appropriate action.
- Report low and out-of-stock levels and stock errors to the Dispensary Manager.
- Assist with bi-annual stocktakes.
- Exercise proper control over stock, cash and company assets.
- Maintain pharmacy housekeeping according to Dis-Chem standards.
- Keep the store, pharmacy workstations and relevant areas clean, organised and free from unnecessary clutter.
- Ensure fridges and workstations remain clear of clutter and personal belongings.
- Adhere to Dis-Chem policies, procedures and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Comply with health and safety rules and regulations.
- Wear the approved Dis-Chem uniform at all times.
Requirements and Skills
- Grade 12 or Matric is essential.
- A Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification is required.
- Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) is essential.
- Applicants must be willing and able to work retail hours.
- Knowledge of retail or FMCG operations will be advantageous.
- A third additional language will be advantageous.
- Knowledge of or experience using SAP and E-Scripting will be beneficial.
- Unisolv experience will be advantageous.
- Candidates should have knowledge and understanding of Unisolv and SAP pharmacy systems.
- Strong communication skills are required, including the ability to engage effectively with people from different sections of the community.
- Candidates must be able to address customer queries in a timely and professional manner.
- Problem-solving ability is important, including knowing when an issue needs to be escalated and the appropriate level of escalation.
- Applicants should take personal responsibility for the quality and timeliness of their work and be able to achieve results with limited supervision.
- Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations are important.
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, are required.
- Good numerical skills are important for prescription processing, claims and other pharmacy administration.
- Candidates should be detail-oriented and accurate when handling prescriptions, patient records and financial or stock information.
- Applicants must be physically fit and able to stand for extended periods.
- A valid driver’s licence is required.
- Candidates must have clear credit and criminal records.
- Applicants must be comfortable working in an environment with controlled room temperature, security requirements, limited space, health and safety considerations and risk stock.
