Science Communication & Advocacy Internship Opportunity at Grain SA Group of Entities

Grain SA Group of Entities invites applications for a Science Communication & Advocacy Intern. This 12-month fixed-term internship provides science graduates the opportunity to combine technical knowledge with communication skills to support evidence-based advocacy for grain producers. The role offers hands-on exposure to the grain value chain, mentoring from experienced professionals, and practical experience in science communication, policy, and digital content creation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate technical research on climate resilience, plant protection, soil health, biotechnology, markets, and food security into clear, engaging articles, newsletters, fact sheets, and explainer content.
  • Assist with press releases, opinion pieces, and media briefs on scientific and economic issues affecting grain producers.
  • Gather insights through interviews with farmers, researchers, and experts to create compelling narratives.
  • Support policy and research teams by converting data into policy briefs, infographics, slide decks, and talking points.
  • Clarify misconceptions about grain farming and assist in preparing submissions, presentations, and background materials for government and media engagements.
  • Contribute to social media content planning, drafting, scheduling, and digital media such as short videos, animations, and data visualisations.
  • Support coverage of industry events such as NAMPO, Congress, and farmer days, including capturing photography, video clips, and interviews.
  • Maintain consistent messaging and visual identity across science-related content while assisting with media monitoring and stakeholder coordination.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc or similar) in Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Science, Food Science, Engineering, Biological/Life Sciences, or related fields.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Afrikaans; additional South African languages advantageous.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and willingness to learn digital content tools such as Canva or basic video editing.
  • Previous exposure to farming, student media, science communication, social media management, or WordPress advantageous but not required.

  • Valid driver’s license and own transport is advantageous.
