676 Young South Africans Graduate from McDonald’s SA and CATHSSETA Learnership Programme

Youth Village attended the graduation ceremony of 676 young South Africans who completed the McDonald’s South Africa (MSA) and CATHSSETA Learnership Programme, a major milestone in empowering youth through job-ready skills in hospitality and tourism. CATHSSETA’s High Impact Programme, which underpins the initiative, aims to tackle unemployment by providing practical training that improves employability and career prospects in the service industry.

CATHSSETA CEO Marks Thibela highlighted the success of the collaboration, saying that “this partnership shows how public and private sector cooperation can create measurable and lasting outcomes for young people.”

According to Dr Masia of McDonald’s South Africa, the results speak for themselves. Out of 1,400 learners trained, 476 have been permanently employed by McDonald’s, while over 75% of others are now working full-time in the industry or have started their own businesses. Dr Masia emphasised that “your certificates are more than qualifications, they symbolise perseverance and progress.”

Graduation ceremonies are being hosted across Limpopo, Gauteng, and North West, with additional events planned for other provinces. Learners were provided transport to ensure everyone could attend and celebrate their achievements. The programme was supported by Training Force and McDonald’s Hamburger University, ensuring high-quality, hands-on training focused on excellence, service, and leadership.

Deputy Minister Gondwe commended the initiative for its social impact, noting that “this programme has restored dignity, created hope, and empowered young South Africans to take charge of their futures.”

As McDonald’s celebrates 30 years in South Africa, the company reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment and community development. Dr Masia stated that “there is no us without you,” highlighting the brand’s dedication to uplifting communities.

CATHSSETA’s Thibela concluded the event by reinforcing the broader impact of the programme: “This is more than a skills programme, it’s a celebration of opportunity, resilience, and the power of partnerships to transform lives.”

The graduation stands as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when industry and government join forces to create real opportunities for South Africa’s youth.
