Caster Semenya Wins Case At the European Court of Human Rights

Caster Semenya Wins Case At the European Court of Human Rights. Congratulations are in order for Caster Semenya, who just won her case at the European Court of Human Rights. For years, she has been fighting against rules which regulates levels of the hormone in female athletes, and it felt like a losing battle.

Following the introduction of limits on testosterone levels for female athletes, Caster has been unable to compete at her favored distance since 2019. In September 2020, she, failed in her bid to be allowed to run the 800m without having to take medication that reduce naturally high levels of testosterone. For Caster to defend her Olympic title she had to take medication to reduce testosterone. Since then, the double Olympic gold medalist has been fighting against the rule.

There was light at the end of the tunnel though. In 2023, the European Court of Human Rights found Switzerland had not afforded Caster sufficient institutional and procedural safeguards to allow her to have her complaints examined effectively.

The high stakes involved for Semenya should have led to a thorough institutional and procedural review, the court said.

On more greater news, Caster has won her appeal against Swiss tribunal ruling. Taking to Instagram, she shared a picture of herself inside the court, in celebration of her victory. Caster, however, is not seeking a return to the track and has turned to coaching, but says she is carrying on the fight for other DSD athletes, who she says are discriminated against.
