Here Are 10 Interesting About the Newly Crowned Miss Universe South Africa Melissa Nayimuli. She has just been announced as South Africa’s representative at the Miss Universe, coming up this November. With all her experience, beauty and brains, we are confident Melissa Nayimuli is going to make the country proud.

1. Melissa was born and raised on 02 January 1996 in Butterworth, in the Eastern Cape to a Xhosa mother and an Ugandan father.

2. The multi-talented Melissa has a BA in Motion Picture Medium from AFDA and majored in television writing.

3. She is a TV and Film creative producer, model and a beauty queen. Melissa started her career as an intern on The Voice Nigeria. She then worked on SABC 2 music show Stand Up SA and has also produced Mzansi Magic’s Lenyalo Ha se Papadi.

4. Melissa made her debut as a director and executive producer through her documentary, Chosi Chosi in 2023. The documentary is around ordinary South African people sharing their stories about their cultures, backgrounds and their truths.

5. As a beauty queen, Melissa needs no introduction. She entered the Miss South Africa competition four times. In 2020, Melissa was among the strong contenders, however she did not win.

6. Undeterred, Mellisa came back in 2023. She did a great job going as far as Top 5, of which is a great achievement. Natasha Joubert, was crowned queen while Byroni Natalie Govender and Nande Mabala were 1st and 2nd runner ups respectively.

7. Despite being born and having lived in South Africa all her life, she has faced the perception of being a foreigner. Growing up, she saw how disrespectful people were towards her father, using derogatory terms. It made her very scared to admit who she was and to embrace her Ugandan heritage.

8. Melissa is a role model to many people out there. She grew up in a society, where the measure of beauty was in the skin tone. What’s worse, her sister and mom were light in color, which made her feel somehow. Thankfully, as the years passed, her perception changed. Melissa saw herself as this beautiful being, and her confidence grew.

9. Her role models is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, because “she is not afraid to speak the truth no matter the cost”. She also looks up to Ava DuVerney “whose commitment to writing stories that challenge the way one sees the world and thinks is inspiring.

10. Melissa is in a serious relationship with actor and Black Brain Pictures founder, Mandla N.
