Interview With Lady X
With her latest single It’s On Tonight hitting the charts hard Lady X is one hot vocalist that you should keep an eye on in the industry. She’s worked with the likes of Gino Brown, MoFlava and the oh so famous Uhuru.
We definitely had to have a sit down with this lady to find out who she is, what is she about and where she’s headed with her music.
Hope you enjoy…
YV: Who is Lady X?
Lady X: I am a vibrant, unique and hard working vocal queen determined to have my sound and craft heard, loved and remembered.
YV: How did you decide on the stage name Lady X?
Lady X: Lady X is a name I was given by my fans when I was still studying at The AAA School of Advertising in Cape Town and performing in my spare time. They’d always say “you’re such a Lady when peoole meet you but when you get on stage, an X – factor takes over you” 🙂
YV: What are some of the challenges you faced before you made it into the industry?
Lady X: Being heard was the biggest challenge, I have a unique voice and my delivery lyrically and vocally took time to get playlisted but when it did, there was nothing that could stop me!
YV: How did the collaboration with Uhuru come about?
Lady X: I was in studio and an instrumental played that was originally vomposed by Mapiano from Uhuru, I started free styling over it and he walked in while I was doing it. He took the recording to Maphorisa(also a member of Uhuru) who fell inlove with my vocal delivery, he got excited about the song and started arranging it. He felt it needed an extra touch and sent it to Black Motion that added their signature Drum Line.
YV: Who are some of your biggest influences in the industry?
Lady X: My influences stem from Jazz & Blues, from legends passed on, namely: Sarah Vaughan and Etta James. Locally I look up to the late great Brenda Fassie because she was so bold and confident in her skin and craft and I pride myself in being a woman that does just that.
YV: If it wasn’t music what other career would you have ventured in to?
Lady X: I’ve already ventured into my other careers, I have an undergraduate degree from The AAA School Of Advertising, majoring in Brand Management and have just completed my Honours from The Vega School Of Brand Leadership majoring in Communications. I’m venturing into Corporate Brand PR and am a trained radio news reader, voice over artists and acting and presenting are in my immediate future. YES!!! I Want to do it ALL and I WILL because I CAN 🙂
YV: Who or what inspires you the most?
Lady X: My mother is my biggest inspiration. All I want to do is make her proud because she has sacrificed so much to get me where I am today and she continually sacrifices for me till date.
YV: Is your stage personality any different to the real Lady X?
Lady X: We are very different! In my every day life I’m just Xolisa, a girl that’s always laughing, telling her mom everything about anything happening in my life, trying to balance school, time with my friends and my career aspirations and just trying to be the best person I can be.
YV: Your top 5 local artists at the moment are:
Cassper Nyovest
AKA
Gino Brown
Black Motion
Zonke
YV: Who’s your local celebrity crush?
Lady X: My friend: Simba Mbhere is my local celebrity crush
YV: Your house is burning, what are the first 5 items you save?
My photo albums
The piano my father bought me when I was 11
My MacBook Pro (all my music and work is in it)
All the clothes I inherited from my mother (Vintage is for life)
My text books, notes and music books
YV: How do you think motherhood will influence your life?
Lady X: I am not a mother yet, maybe in 5years after I’ve travelled the world, performed internationally, danced at festivals all over the world barefoot in the rain and met my partner in life.
YV: What advice would you like to give the SA youth, particularly those trying to build a music career?
Lady X: Know who you are and your values before you attempt entering the music industry! you need to be strong in character for this industry and education is a key tool, it opens your mind and helps you make better decisions.
YV: If Lady X were to be an acronym what would the letters stand for?
L: lady
A: astoundingly
D: daring to go against
Y: your musical conventions
