Oscar Pistorius Granted Parole. Social media has been going abuzz with the news of Oscar Pistorius’s parole hearing. Well, the man is going to trend even more, as he has just been granted parole.
According to a statement issued by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Pistorius has been placed on parole effective from the 5th January 2023. The decision was made after the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board assessed the former Paralympic star’s profile. Other material submitted for the purpose of the parole were also looked into.
Since is is a first time offender, Pistorius’ parole placement is in line with Section 73 of the Correctional Service Act. His parole is part of the total rehabilitation programme in correcting offending behavior. It may include continuation of programme aimed at reintegration whiles in the system of community corrections. In the meantime, Pistorius will serve the remainder of his sentence in the system of community corrections. He will be subjected to supervision in compliance with parole conditions until his sentence expires.
Pistorius was jailed in 2014 for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013. He was initially jailed for five years in for culpable homicide by a high court. The supreme court of appeal in late 2015 found him guilty of murder after an appeal by prosecutors. Pistorius was sent back to jail for six years in 2016 after a high court sentence, but the following year, the supreme court more than doubled his murder sentence to 13 years and five months.
Back in March, Pistorius was denied parole after it was ruled that he had not completed the minimum detention period required to be considered for parole. This time around it is alleged that Reeva’s mother did not oppose his freedom bid.
