About the Programme

Successful applicants will undergo structured theoretical and practical training in one of SAAT’s approved aviation trades. The programme aims to develop highly skilled artisans who meet both industry and regulatory standards.

Job Purpose

South African Airways Technical (SAAT) invites young, passionate South African citizens to apply for the 2026 Apprenticeship / Learnership Programme. This opportunity is ideal for individuals interested in building a career in aircraft maintenance and related technical trades.  

Minimum Educational Level

  • Grade Twelve (Matric) or Equivalent

Qualification and Experience

Educational Requirements:

  • Option 1: Grade 12 (Matric)
  • 50% or Level 4 Pure Mathematics
  • 50% or Level 4 Physical Science English (symbol required)

OR

  • Option 2: N3 Certificate
  • 50% pass in Mathematics
  • 50% pass in Engineering Science

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to read and write in English (essential)
  • Basic understanding of technical or mechanical concepts (advantageous)
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately
  • Good communication skills

Attributes

Applicants must demonstrate the following:

  • Attributes Team player with the ability to work well with others.
  • Strong attention to detail Willingness to learn and adapt in a technical environment
  • Good problem-solving attitude
  • Responsible and safety-conscious mindset

Trades Offered

Applicants may choose two trades in order of preference:

  • Aircraft Welding: Welding, repairing aircraft and engine components, plasma spraying, heat treatment, and manufacturing of parts and tooling.
  • Aircraft Spray Painting: Corrosion prevention, repairing paint coatings, applying protective coatings, and painting aircraft interiors and exteriors.
  • Aircraft Trimming: Manufacturing, repairing, inspecting, and maintaining aircraft interiors and survival equipment.
  • Aircraft Composite Structures: Manufacturing, repairing, inspecting, and maintaining aircraft composite components.

  • Certified copies of all qualifications (Matric certificate or N3 certificate)
  • Any additional supporting documents (if applicable)

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Assessments include interviews, psychometric tests, medicals, security clearance and background checks. Assessments and interviews will take place in Gauteng for this intake. Use your permanent residential address when applying.
