Nonhle Thema Pays Tribute to Her Late Parents With A Heartwarming Throwback. Losing a parent to death is hard, and we can’t even imagine the pain of losing both. Nonhle Thema knows the pain very well, as she recently lost her mother, who was her only remaining parent.
Back in January 2022, the talented media personality, actress, entrepreneur and podcaster lost her father Derrick Thema. Just like his famous daughter, Derrick was a man of many talents. Among them he was an established journalist and actor. He also starred in the 80s South African blockbuster, The Gods Must Be Crazy. When announcing her father’s passing Nonhle shared a clip from one of his scenes from the movie.
A week ago, Nonhle lost her mother, Cynthia Shange. The former Miss South Africa and talented actress passed away on the 20th of April 2026. Mama Cynthia was a beauty queen who won the beauty pageant title of Miss Natal in 1972. This qualified her to enter the Miss South Africa, which she also won. Mama Shange then made history as the first Black woman to represent the country in Miss World 1972.
She is also a renowned actress known for her role as Thandaza’s other in Muvhango. Mama Shange also captivated audiences in SA’s first black feature film, Udeliwe, alongside Joe Mafela. In 1986 she was cast as “Mkabi” in the five part mini-series Shaka Zulu. Mama Cynthia was buried this past Sunday in a private funeral.
Nonhle has just shared a cool throwback of her parents back in the day. She then paid a tribute to them on the caption.
“Reunited in heaven 🕊️🕊️ Our Angels Mom and Dad ♥️♥️Thank You 🙏🏽,” she captioned the picture.
