Football Legend Dr Khumalo Bags An Honorary Doctorate. Congratulations are in order for Theophilus Doctor Khumalo, who has now officially earned the title, Dr. The former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs players has just been awarded an Honorary Doctorate at The Tshwane University of Technology.
Many came to know Dr Khumalo as a brilliant soccer player, who played both locally and abroad. He also went into coaching and every now and the does football analysis on TV. Now he is shinning with a Doctor of Philosophy in Science (Kinesiology and Coaching Science), and is being celebrated by the nation.

The Tshwane University of Technology is proud to officially confer upon Theophilus Doctor Khumalo an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Science (Kinesiology and Coaching Science) through the Faculty of Science.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in South African history, Dr Khumalo is also a highly accomplished coach, talent scout, and respected football analyst.
This honorary doctorate celebrates his extraordinary journey, honours his exceptional talent, and recognises his immense contribution to South African football, as well as his unwavering commitment to developing and inspiring the next generation of soccer stars.

Dr Khumalo joins a growing number of legendary stars conferred with doctorates. On the 25th of March 2026, Leleti Khumalo was honored with a Honorary Doctorate (LLD) from Rhodes University. This was in recognition of her profound contribution to South African theatre, film and television, and for her enduring role in using storytelling to illuminate the social realities of the country. In September 2025, Carol Bouwer was honored in the US with a Doctorate. This reflected to her decades of purpose, passion, and powerful advocacy for humanity.
Another football legend Kaizer Motaung also goes by the Dr. title. In July 2025, he was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Commerce at the University of the Witwatersrand. The honor was for his immense role in uplifting disadvantaged youth, promoting social cohesion, and developing football as both a
sport and a unifying force in South Africa. Before then, Motaung bagged an Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences fro the University of Cape Town in 2022.
