Petition For Zuma To Step Down Gets 40 000 Signatures

In the past 24 hours several petitions have emerged calling for Zuma to step down. In the description Brent Lindeque, who started the petition, said it was “simple”: “Lead or step down. Unfortunately Jacob Zuma cannot lead. His continuous actions and decisions are ruining South Africa. Our unemployment has never been higher. Crime and corruption have become a standard. Government are pillaging our taxes and our economy is at a tipping point. We need change,” he wrote.

President Jacob Zuma announced late on Wednesday that he was replacing Nene with ANC backbencher David van Rooyen. He said Nene would be redeployed to another “strategic” position to be announced in due course. Just after Zuma’s announcement the rand started to drop.

On Facebook, users created a #ZumaMustFall March invitation, which has been organised to take place on December 16 at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. By 9am on Friday, over 5 000 people had marked themselves as attending with another 6 000 interested in taking part.

A second group formed a Facebook page – #ZUMAMUSTFALLMARCH – with a planned protest for February 1, 2016.
