Dispensary Support Opportunity at Dis-Chem Baywest Mall

Dis-Chem Pharmacies at Baywest Mall in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, is offering a Fixed Term position for Dispensary Support. This role is aimed at learners pursuing the basic pharmacist assistant course and provides practical, on-the-job training in a professional pharmacy environment.

Role Purpose and Overview

The Dispensary Support role focuses on equipping learners with the skills and knowledge required to operate in a dispensary under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist. This includes assisting with dispensing, stock management, and customer service, while promoting quality and compliance in all pharmaceutical practices. Successful candidates may be considered for permanent employment upon completion of the learner basic assistant course and SAPC registration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines and scheduled substances under pharmacist supervision.
  • Support compounding, preparation, and manipulation of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and SOPs.
  • Help with unpacking, merchandising, and cleaning of dispensary and OTC stock.
  • Accurately interpret prescriptions and act within legal requirements set by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
  • Ensure correct picking, packing, and labelling of medication, and alert pharmacists to important dosages or drug interactions.
  • Monitor and manage dispensary stock, including expiry dates and shelf organisation.
  • Assist with chronic, HIV, AIDS, and oncology medication authorizations.
  • Support call centre scripts and patient service telephone queries.
  • Follow up with patients regarding script tracking and appointments.
  • Receive and check dispensary stock in line with company SOPs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or Senior Certificate with at least 50% in Pure Mathematics and Life Science or Physical Science, and an overall average of 50%.
  • Completion of a proficiency test to qualify for SAPC registration as a learner basic assistant.
  • South African citizen with a clear criminal and credit record.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficiency in English and one additional language (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Time management, attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong communication, customer service, teamwork, problem-solving, and conflict management skills.
  • Computer literacy and basic numerical skills.
  • Professional conduct, honesty, accountability, and trustworthiness.

Advantageous Skills

  • Experience in retail FMCG or Dis-Chem front shop operations.
  • Knowledge of drug and family planning, complementary medicine.
  • Familiarity with Unisolv, SAP, and e-scripting systems.
