Breaking News! Former President Jacob Zuma Gets A Jail Sentence

Breaking News! Former President Jacob Zuma Gets A Jail Sentence. Former South Africa President Jacob Zuma has been sentenced to 15 months imprisonment by the Constitutional Court. Zuma was found guilty of contempt after defying the court’s order to appear at an inquiry into corruption while he was president.

The former president made one appearance at the inquiry into what has become known as “state capture” but then refused to appear subsequently. The commission was probing, inter alia, allegations of state capture during his nine-year presidency. The inquiry, headed by Justice Raymond Zondo then asked the Constitutional Court to intervene.

Zuma failed to appear before the commission and stated that he had lost trust in the judiciary. He said he had taken a political position not to take part in the matter because the judiciary was engaged in political battles against him. After being found guilty in this contempt of court case, Zuma will also have to pay for the costs of the entire matter.

Zuma now have five days to hand himself over to the police, giving him a deadline that runs to Sunday 4 July. He has a choice of stations to report to, he can either go to his local one in Nkandla, or the central one in Johannesburg. If Zuma refuses to comply with the law, Police Minister Bheki Cele and senior members of SAPS will be tasked with ensuring that he is arrested.
