Database Administrator Wanted At Rhino Africa. With their offices in the bustling hub of Cape Town, Rhino Africa, the ‘leading luxury safari company’ in Africa is seeking a full-time database administrator to join their rapidly expanding Business Intelligence team

Responsibilities Include

  • Collaborating with Rhino Africa’s development teams regarding physical database design and implementation
  • Monitoring daily execution of ETL processes and providing support for power-users, application administrators and other technical teams
  • Leading optimization efforts and performance measurement activities around transactional and data warehouse systems, ETL data handling, indexing and general database processing
  • Ensuring the consistent performance, security and availability of Rhino Africa’s databases
  • Handling common database procedures such as backups, replications, disaster recovery planning, migrations, upgrades, documentation and testing
  • Identifying automation opportunities from continuous integration or deployment, to manual processes automation
  • Establishing company-wide standards and best practices, with regard to databases

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or a related field
  • Two+ years of experience in database administration, data modelling and database design (schemas, tables, indexes, etc), as well as performance optimization, replication and backup strategies in Oracle, MS SQL, PostgreSQL and/or MySQL environments
  • Proficiency in Unix systems administration
  • Strong scripting abilities and knowledge of console usage (bash, crons, etc.)
  • Experience developing stored procedures, triggers, user defined functions and views
  • A desire to stay up-to-date with emerging technologies through self-study and internal training
  • A strong understanding of code versioning tools
  • A rigorous nature complemented by well-honed analytic and troubleshooting skills

Attributes Include:

  • Proficiency certifications in specific databases and/or relevant postgraduate qualifications
  • Experience in provisioning, deploying and administering services in the cloud
  • An interest in or experience with Spark or other Big Data ecosystems
  • eCommerce experience
