“We Who Remain Behind Are the Ones Serving A Life Sentence,” Reeva Steenkamp’s Mom

“We Who Remain Behind Are the Ones Serving A Life Sentence,” Reeva Steenkamp’s Mom. One thing about losing a loved one, there will always be occurrences that makes the wound fresh again. For June Steenkamp, it definitely has to be the release of Oscar Pistorius on parole.

She is mother of murdered model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot dead by her then boyfriend Pistorius on the 14th February 2013. Today, Friday 5th, the former Paralympic was released on parole from Pretoria’s Atteridgeville Correctional Centre.

As expected, the news have been received with deferent views. For June though, she wants to put it all behind her. Her main focus is on the foundation set up to help victims of gender-based violence, a cause her daughter had believed in.

In a statement just released, June said she and her late husband Barry were appreciative that the parole board had directed Oscar to undergo anger management courses during his correctional service period. Regarding justice, she stated that there can never be justice if your loved one is never coming back and no amount of time served will bring Reeva back.

We, who remain behind, are the ones serving a life sentence.

With the release of Oscar Pistorius on parole, my only desire is that I will be allowed to live my last years in peace with my focus remaining on the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation to continue Reeva’s legacy,” she said.

June concluded her statement by thanking the public for their support thoroughout the years. She also extended her gratitude to the media and all the friends who stood by her family. A special thank you was extended to advocate Gerrie Nel, advocate Andrea Johnson, advocate Dup de Bruin, the investigating team, advocate Annade-Theart Hofmeyer, and her daughter Simone, and Tania Koen.
