Interview With Vibrant Singer & Songwriter- NOM

NOM, (real name Nomthandazo Mahlangu) is a young inspirational artist who is fresh in the music scene but is already making waves with her first single, Uthingo. NOM brings a new sound which blends various popular music genres and garnishes it with a coy afro flavour. In this interview, we get to know NOM a little bit more as she tells us about her love for music.

YV: Who is Nom?

I am a singer and songwriter. I am young ,artistic and I love beautiful things.

YV: How did your love for music come about?

After a friend of mine mentioned that she thought I had a lovely voice, I started singing. I loved how music made me feel, how it was a new found way to express myself, how it connected me to people and how there is always music for every emotion. That’s how I fell in love with music.

YV: Tell us about your debut album ‘Uthingo’, what makes it unique?

Uthingo is a zulu word that means Rainbow. A Rainbow is a symbol of the passing of a trying time and in uthingo I remind the listener about this. However, uthingo is one of the singles from my upcoming album, love. Many of the songs on this album are originals. What makes love unique is that it fuses a lot of different sounds

YV: What are some of the challenges you face in the music industry?

Being so young in the music industry and having to work twice as hard to earn a place in limelight.

YV: Are you a signed artist or an independent artist?

I am a signed artist under mYm Records and Artistry Talent Management.

YV: Who are your musical influences?

Minnie Riperton, Miriam Makeba and Etta James

YV: What do you do for fun?

That depends on my mood. Some of the things I do is watch movies, play video games and karaoke

YV: What is your favourite local song at the moment?

Suzan by the Soil.

YV: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years time I see myself as a university graduate whose an established artist and international brand.

YV: Any advice to young people who want to pursue a career in music?

I’m young and haven’t had much experience, but what has worked for me so far is having confidence in myself and my craft. Know what you want and don’t be afraid to get it.

YV: Where can people get your music?

My music is available on various online platforms namely: Itunes, Amazon and spotify.
