10 South African Foods You Have To Try Before You Die

South Africa is known for it’s rich cultures that blend well together. This also means a lot of different signature foods that are proudly South African. We’ve put together a list and these are the once you have to try before you die.

1. Boerewoes -Highly spiced farm-made sausages made by the Afrikaans. The meat contained within sausage comprises of mutton, beef and pork.

2. Bobotie – Mild cape malay curry dish which features almonds, ground beef, sultanas and egg custard. Bobotie is most commonly served with pilaf rice and sambals and chopped tomatoes.

3. Bunny chow -Bunny chow is originally from Durban. It’s a hollowed out half loaf bread filled with delicacies like curry lamb, chicken or beef and sometimes it can be vegetarian in nature.

4. Mashonzha –A traditional Zulu dish. It’s mopane worms fried or grilled. Served with peanut chilliĀ  sauce to enhance flavor.

5. Waterblommetje – Waterblommetje is a vegetable stew made from some some edible form of water lilies. This stew is regarded as the as the best company for pap and is usually spiced to enhance it’s flavor.

6. Koeksisters- This dish is a favorite among the Afrikaners community. Koeksisters can be regarded as candied vegetable usually made by drenching vegetable in fat and syrup and then deep frying them.

7. Pap- This is a dish that is native to many parts of Africa. Made of ground corn which is mixed with hot water and stirred to create a dense paste. It is usually accompanied with meat or vegetables.

8. Flikkadels- Flikkadels is in the category of a small sized hamburger and meatball due to their peculiar size. They are generally regarded as snacks but also feature in main meals.

9. Droewors- Dorewors is a spiced sausage and can be generally regarded as a smaller thinner version of boerewors but without the pork. They are usually sun dried like biltong.

10. Braai- Braai is basically roast meat. It has been elevated to the level of an art form due to it’s popularity amongst the general population most specifically white South Africa.
