Top 10 Things You Post On Facebook and Twitter That Could Cost You Your Job

watch-what-you-say-on-twitter-300Social media takeover, it’s real. Business is social media right now and certain things you say or do on social platforms can basically build or destroy your career over a few characters. To have a great reputation on line and off line in business one needs to avoid certain things and not expose so many personal views and activities, social platforms have moved from being personal to being business platforms.

Here’s list of Top 10 Things You Post On Facebook and Twitter That Could Cost You Your Job:

10. Strong Political Views

Political views are one thing that you can discuss with friends but associating your political views with business is wrong turn 5.0 it’s just not done on social media. You don’t know how your boss or fellow employees may feel about your political affiliations and the way you represent them on social networks. More important than your employees or bosses, your clients or related business associates, sometimes what you support or stand for may cost you the biggest account or client of the year just because they’re for the opposing party.

9. Strong Racial Views

Now this has been an issue in your young yet very old history in South Africa. No matter how much you think racial jokes are funny they may sometimes offend the people who have the most influence on your career. Avoid making racial commentary on social media or using words that make them feel diminutive because of their race and undermine someones capabilities because of that. Be as upset as you want to at someone but stay away from playing the racial card, or you could be filling out an unemployment card soon.

8. Strong Religious Views

As much as religion has a lot of influence on almost everyone, we don’t all have the same religious beliefs or affiliations! How you feel about someone’s religion should have nothing to do with how business is done. At the end of the day salaries have to be paid and business has to move on, don’t associate bad business decisions with religion, it could cost you your job.

7. Profanity

Language, language, language! The most important part of business and keeping a good reputation with your employer and fellow employees is having great communication and using the appropriate language. Vulgar language on social media may not send the best message to your boss. They’ll end up thinking that that’s the language you use with clients too and that’s not a very good look for you.

6. Semi Nude Photos

Now why you wanna go and do that, that, that? Stay away from ASS-Attention Seeking Syndrome, nobody needs to know how good you look in lingerie, specially not your manager or big boss. It’s unprofessional and just plain out disrespectful to yourself and fellow business associates. Nudity can sell a car sure but, what are you selling?

5. Excessive Partying and Drinking

Let’s have a good life and enjoy our personal lives yes but, when you post a picture drunk at midnight on Sunday then surely there’s something wrong. Why should your boss give you the day off on Monday morning when you call in “Sick”, watch what you post and when you post it.

4. Trashing your old Boss or previous company

Burning bridges and then trashing your boss in public is not sexy and is just plain out childish! Avoid discussing or mentioning past work relations online, it creates room for bad space to start at your new work environment. Focus on the present instead of bashing the past.

3. Being Sexist

No one wants to be around someone who goes on all day about how awesome the same sex is and how the opposite sex shows incompetence etc etc. A great work ethic is represented not only by the way you carry yourself but also by the way you treat those around you. As much as you may be for women or men, what happens when someone of the opposite sex offers you a great job, do you turn it down now because you simply can’t work with or for someone of the opposite sex?

2. Hate speech

Avoid hate speech, it’s basically against the law. Gossip has moved from being casual to being a part of bigger issues or even law suits and that’s not good for business or your reputation and your employers.

1. Drug Use

So drugs are illegal right? Please show me a boss that would still keep you on board after you post a pic of you and your mates blazing after a long day at work? Don’t do it, if you do do it, keep it off the social networks mate! It’s bad for business.
