Brights Hardware is hiring a General Assistant for its Building Department in Blackheath, Western Cape. This permanent role focuses on supporting yard operations, assisting customers and maintaining accurate stock handling in a fast paced retail hardware environment. The position is ideal for individuals who are physically fit, reliable and able to deliver strong customer service while working in an outdoor building materials yard. You will play an important role in ensuring smooth stock movement, safe handling of materials and a clean, organised working environment.

Job Overview

The General Assistant in the Building Department is responsible for supporting daily yard operations and ensuring customers receive efficient and accurate service. You will assist with loading customer vehicles, delivery trucks and transfer vehicles while ensuring stock is correctly counted and stacked. The role requires attention to detail, physical stamina and the ability to work in all weather conditions. You will also help maintain cleanliness, report stock issues and support inventory processes. This position is essential in ensuring operational efficiency and customer satisfaction in the building materials section.

Key Responsibilities

• Load customer vehicles, delivery trucks and transfer trucks accurately and safely
• Ensure stock is correctly stacked, counted and organised in the yard
• Assist with pulling and preparing stock for transfers
• Report stock shortages and damaged goods promptly
• Maintain cleanliness and housekeeping standards in work areas
• Assist customers with product information and excellent service
• Bag and handle materials such as sand and stone when required
• Participate in regular stock takes and inventory checks
• Support general yard operations as instructed by supervisors
• Ensure safe handling of all building materials and equipment
• Maintain a professional and helpful attitude toward customers
• Follow all safety procedures and company policies

Requirements And Skills

• Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
• 1 Year minimum experience in a similar role (preferred)
• Strong customer service skills
• Ability to count and manage stock accurately
• Good communication skills in English or local language
• Physically fit and able to handle heavy lifting and manual labour
• Ability to work under pressure in a busy environment
• Team player with a strong work ethic
• Self-disciplined and reliable approach to work
• Willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions
• Basic understanding of retail or building materials environment is an advantage
