Agricultural Economics

Agricultural Economics dates back to the 20th century and it’s an internationally recognised subject field of study. The practice of Agricultural Economics is cultured in agribusiness, natural resources, marketing of agricultural products, commodity trading, economic analysis, agricultural statistics and financial services.

Basic Admission Criteria at Universities

National Senior Certificate (NSC)
Subjects: Mathematics: 5 (60%-69%) or 4 (50%-59%) provided a level 5 is obtained for Physical Science, Physical Science: 5 (60%-69%) or 4 (50%-59%) provided a level 5 is obtained for Mathematics, English or Afrikaans: 4 (50%-59%), Additional language 4 (50%-59%), Life Orientation: 4 (50%-59%) (Excluded when calculating the APS), Two other subjects: 4 (50%-59%)

Work Opportunities

As agricultural economist, you will work in the fields of leading financial institutions, agribusinesses, government departments and state owned entities, globally recognised organisations, commercial farms, freight and rail industry, imports and exports companies, renowned research institutions. In this field of specialty, you get to travel extensively (local and abroad) and become exposed to various insights of economics with opportunities to build on your career and/or business enterprise.

You can apply for bursaries at banks, NFAS, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Provincial
Departments of Agriculture, agribusiness or alternatively contact University Student Centre’s at a nearest
campus.
