Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and LinkedIn CEO Jeffrey Weiner addressed the media in a joint statement stating that this partnership is to bring more women into the technology world. The two companies are set to launch mentoring and support programs in colleges that will attract more women to study technology and it will also help them identify their future employees for their respective companies.

The statistics released by Facebook last year on diversity figures show that only 15% of the 31% women working for Facebook are tech employees and 17% of the 39% women working for LinkedIn are tech employees. The demographics is almost similar in most of the companies at Silicon Valley.

Another partner in the initiative Telle Whitney who is the president and CEO of Anita Borg said that this kind of diversity will take innovation in technology to an all new level. “If everyone creates similar products, the results won’t be interesting, so it is for the sake of our future that more women are involved n all the projects that can change lives” Whitney said.

Although the companies did not reveal their financial contributions to the initiative, their aim is to go global adding public and private universities.
