If there’s an industry that South Africa excelled in, it has to be modelling. Looking back a few years ago, the standard of modelling was great and has been maintained well throughout generations. This list will take you through the times of hot South African Models for the 90 till the early 2000’s.

1. Basetsana Khumalo

Basetsana “Bassie” Kumalo is a South African television personality, beauty pageant titleholder, businesswoman, and philanthropist. Her career began in 1990 when she was crowned Miss Soweto and Miss Black South Africa at the age of 16. She was crowned Miss South Africa in 1994 and in the same year became the first runner-up in Miss World.

2. Noni Gasa

Noni Gasa is a TV personality, fashion journo, stylist, lecturer and serial “most stylish” award winner. Though she does not consider herself a professional model because she is short and every shoot, catwalk appearance or modelling job she’s ever done has always been in her capacity as a public personality. Either advertising a product, endorsing a campaign or being featured in a magazine.

3. Mirriam Ngomani

Mirriam Ngomani is a South African model and actress best known for her role as a suitcase model in the game show Deal Or No Deal, from 2007-2008. She has appeared in an advertising campaign for Nivea and modelled at shows for South Africa’s Fashion Week, in both Durban and Cape Town. She has also had roles in the movies Hotel Rwanda (2004) and Lord Of War (2005).

4. Phuti Khomo

Phuti Khomo is a South African actress, radio DJ, television presenter and model best known for winning the Miss S.A. Teen 2002. Since then she has been seen acting the role of Bali on the M-Net soapie Egoli, and as Phaphama Molefe on the SABC1 drama series Mtunzini.com, from 2008-2009.

5. Rosette Mogomotsi

Rosette Mogomotsi is a South African model best known for her role as ia suitcase model in the game show Deal Or No Deal. She has modelled in television commercials for Chicken Lickin’ and Jet Clothing. She has appeared in the magazines True Love, Elle, Babe and has modelled the Noni Gaza range for Legit Clothing

6. Claire Mawisa

Claire Mawisa is a South African television presenter, model and radio personality best known for being an SABC1 continuity presenter between 1999 and 2001, as well as for co-hosting the SABC1 music variety show One, from 2002-2003. At the age of 14 years old, Claire was approached, by a model boss and was asked whether she would be interested in modelling. After signing with Topco Models, they decided to enter Claire into the prestigious model competition, Cosmopolitan Model of the Year 1994, to get an idea of what the industry was like. She became the youngest and the second black South African beauty to be featured on the cover of the local Cosmopolitan magazine.

7. Joelle Khayambe

Joelle Kayembe is a Congolese-born South African model best known for her role as a suitcase model in the game show Deal or No Deal. She has appeared in Ludacris’s Pimpin All Over The World music video, she was a finalist in the International Supermodel 2005 competition in China and is included as a Global Honey on SKY TV in the UK.

8. Lerato Moloi

Lerato Moloi is a South African fashion model who, in 2009, became the first black face for the cosmetics brand Elizabeth Arden. Initially, she had been interested in psychology, but after visiting a modelling agency with her mother and younger sister, she became interested in modelling. Her modelling career officially began at the age of 17 and her first professional photo shoot was for Elle Magazine.

9. Koane Kario

International model and TV presenter Kaone Kario is a rare package of beauty, brains and talent. Born in a small town in Botswana she has become a formidable force in the modelling industry and travelled extensively. She is known for winning the Face of Africa in 2005 and modelling in New York for Wilhemina models in New York Kaone has branched out into television as well.

10. Connie Ferguson

Connie Ferguson a South African actress and model best known for her role as Karabo Moroka on the SABC1 soapie Generations, from the first episode on 4 February, 1994 to October, 2010. Connie has also appeared in advertisements for Ellerines, Ultramel Custard, Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion and Black Like Me. Her work in the advertising and modelling arena includes numerous fashion and beauty shoots for Wella Sheen, Eskamel, Black Chic, Vodacom Billboards and Connie M Eyewear.
