Sad Note! Nonhle Thema Announces the Passing of Her Mother Former Muvhango Actress Cynthia Shange. The death of a mother is one of the most painful loses that anyone can go through. Nonhle Thema is currently experiencing that as she just lost her mother, Cynthia Shange.

Nonhle and Mama Shange, had a very beautiful relationship. Every chance, she got, Nonhle celebrated her mother. Two years ago, when Mama Shange was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at KZN Simon Mabhunu Sabelo Awards, Nonhle sang her praises. The media personality, actress and entrepreneur celebrated her mother for the recognition.

Sadly, Mama Shange is no more. Her daughter Nonhle took to social media to share the news, as well as an update on proceedings. According to her statement Mama Shange passed away today, (20th April 2026). Nonhle describes her as a graceful and compassionate soul. Further details regarding funeral arrangements will follow.

With a heavy heart, I share the news of our Dear Mother🙏🏽 please keep my family in your prayers during this difficult time🙏🏽,” Nonhle said.

The passing of Mama Shange is not only a loss for her family and loved ones only, it is also for the rest of the nation. She was a beauty queen who won the beauty pageant title of Miss Natal in 1972. This qualified her to enter the Miss South Africa, which she also won. Mama Shange then made history as the first Black woman to represent the country in Miss World 1972.

She is also a renowned actress known for her role as Thandaza’s other in Muvhango. Mama Shange also captivated audiences in SA’s first black feature film, Udeliwe, alongside Joe Mafela. In 1986 she was cast as “Mkabi” in the five part mini-series Shaka Zulu.
