Sad Note: Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Labert Mazibuko Passes Away. It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the passing of Mr Labert Mazibuko (77), born in Ladysmith, Embuzweni.
Mazibuko was a revered elder, cultural custodian, and long-standing member of the legendary group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He dedicated over five decades of his life to music, having joined the group in 1969. His voice and presence became a defining part of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s sound, contributing to a legacy that resonated across South Africa and the world.
Affectionately known as “the librarian”, Mazibuko was a keeper of the group’s rich history as well as a source of wisdom to many. He was truly an intelligent man, whose knowledge, humility, and quiet strength lefts lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Through his work, Mazibuko helped carry forward the vision of Dr Joseph Shabalala, ensuring that the beauty and significance of isicathamiya music reached global audiences. Sadly his passing marks the end of an era. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones and all who were touched by his life and legacy. His legacy will continue to live on through the music.
