Somizi Applauded for His Response After Ngizwe Mchunu’s Backlash

Somizi Applauded for His Response After Ngizwe Mchunu’s Backlash. Ngizwe Mchunu has really made a name for himself as someone who is highly opinionated. His strong views on people often lands him in serious trouble. A couple of years back, he was accused of instigating and urging others to commit theft and violence, and was consequently charged with incitement to commit public violence.
This time around, the radio personality and sangoma said some derogatory remarks about the LGBTQIA+ community. Mchunu was not impressed seeing a gay couple getting married, rocking Imvunulo. This is a traditional South African attire, particularly among the Zulu and Swazi people, worn by both men and women to signify age, social status, and marital status. It is a form of ceremonial and cultural wear, often featuring intricate bead-work and traditional fabrics. Imvunulo is prominently showcased during cultural events, weddings and religious gathering
Mchunu posted a video on social media, saying the men were mocking the Zulu tradition. He also stated that men dating other men were responsible for “social problems” in South Africa. In his backlash, Mchunu singled out media personality Somizi Mhlongo, saying he should leave the country with his nation.
Somizi was quite mature in his response. He waited for the right time to take on the issue. The celebrated media personality and entertainer started by saying everyone involved missed an opportunity to educate. According to Somizi, he was not aware that Imvunulo is supposed to be worn by royals. He also shared that with all the anger and the noise that was happening, he was able to find something he could learn from.
“There was a missed opportunity to educate each other that was missed. I’m Zulu; I did not know there’s an imvunulo that can only be worn by the royals. I did not know that,” Somizi said.
He also urged the LGBTQ+ community to not drag Mchunu, citing that the law must take it’s course. Many are really impressed by Somizi’s mature response.
“The Human Rights Commission has to do something to make sure this does not continue. He needs to know he can’t wake up and decide people must be killed; their anger is misdirected. There’s so many things that are happening,” Somizi added.
