President Cyril Ramaphosa Calls Tyla to Personally Congratulate Her. Congratulatory messages have been pouring i for the star. Tyla made herself and the country proud on Sunday, when she won her first Grammy.
She bagged the Best African Music Performance Award for her hit song Water. The new category was created in order for the Academy to honor music from the continent, according to Academy President Harvey Mason Jr. For the award Tyla beat ASAKE & Olamide – Amapiano, Burna Boy – City BoysMiracle, Davido Featuring Musa Keys – UNAVAILABLE and Ayra Starr – Rush.
One of those who congratulated Tyla on her iconic win is Cyril Ramaphosa. The president took it upon himself to personally video call Tyla. He told her that just like the rest of the nation, he is proud of her.
“My spirit was raised so much today as I spent time engaging with young people – including a video call with Tyla, our Grammy-winning performer and songwriter, who celebrated her 22nd birthday less than a week ago. I shared with her my pride and that of the nation at her achievement of the Grammy for Best African Music Performance. Well done again, Tyla,” he said.
Ramaphosa also expressed his excitement after being part of a pre-State of the Nation Address gathering of young people at Belhar, Cape Town. Attendees celebrated the impact of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention which has opened doors for many young people in the past three years.
