The Nation Reacts to the Untimely Passing of former Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson

The Nation Reacts to the Untimely Passing of former Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson. In a space of a couple of days we have lost a couple of well known figures. It started with broadcaster, author and political analyst, Eusebius McKaiser on the 30th of May.

On the same day, it was also announced that actress and Radio Personality Marietjie Bothma was no more. A day after that, the country had to deal with the passing away of veteran actor Patrick Ndlovu. It has been indeed a couple of days filled with condolences.

Another public figure, Tina Joemat-Pettersson recently passed on. ANC chief whip Pemmy Majodina confirmed on Monday that Joemat-Pettersson died at home. She served as Minister of Energy from 25 May 2014 to 31 March 2017 and was the Minister of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries from 2009 to 2014. At the time of her death, the ANC member of parliament, was serving as the chair of the committee on police in Parliament.

She also served in the section 194 committee conducting an inquiry into suspended public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office.

As it is with most politicians, Joemat-Pettersson was embroiled in several controversies throughout her time in office. These include her role in a failed nuclear deal and the travelgate saga.

In her recent scandal, it’s alleged that she tried to extort R600 000 from Mkhwebane to make a case against her “go away”.

Social media has their own conspiracy theories over Joemat-Pettersson’s untimely passing. Some believe she took her own life, and there are those who believe there is more to her passing than meets the eye. Whatever the case we send our most sincere condolences to Joemat-Pettersson’s family, colleagues as well as loved ones.
