“I Am Human Before I Am VC,” Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng On Remaining True to Herself. She is definitely one of the coolest high profile people we have in the country. Despite her age and the position she holds, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng is all about enjoying her life to the fullest.
She doesn’t call herself the Fab Academic for nothing. The 55 year old University of Cape Town vice-chancellor follows cool trends, interacts very well with students, has time for fun among many other things. Through her Twitter account, Professor Mamokgethi, shares most of her cool activities with the world out there.
About two years back, Professor Mamokgethi joined the nation with her version of the Duduzane Zuma Walk Challenge. Celebrating the UCT doctoral graduates , she walked like a boss, and did those famous air punches that Duduzane is known for. The cool Professor was also one of the judges at Miss SA 2021 beauty pageant.
When she celebrated her 55th birthday, Mamokgethi broke the internet, after she took to social media to share how she celebrated her big day. In some of the pictures, she looked all sorts of sexy in a white two piece bikini. She also included a brief video of herself swimming, much to the delight of her followers.
Obviously, how free she in life might be rubbing some people off the wrong way. Well, if you feel some type of way about how the Professor lives her life, then tough luck. She is not about to change so that she can fit society’s perceptions.
“I will never alter one bit of myself in order to try to fit society’s perception of how a university VC looks like. My work represents me, not what I choose to wear or do in my free time. I do not compromise on authenticity; after all, I am human before I am VC,” Mamokgethi said.
