High Court Orders The Basic Education Department to Publish Matric Results on All Public Platforms. Just about a week ago it was announced that this year’s Matric Exam results won’t be published on media platforms. Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, stated that this right to privacy included a right to protection against the unlawful collection, retention, dissemination and use of personal information.
Of course the news was received differently by different individuals across the country. Some felt that there was no need to change something that has been done for years. They reasoned that seeing your name in a newspaper brings excitement, something that this generation will truly miss. Other people though, agreed with this arrangement, in order to protect those who didn’t do well from embarrassment that can lead to depression and suicide.
In an interesting twist of events, the Basic Education department has been ordered by the Pretoria High court to publish the matric results on all public platforms. This comes after Afriforum lodged to review the decision on an urgent basis. A part of the ruling states that the publication of results should not reflect the first names and surnames of the pupils.
The publication of the results will go as it did in 2020 where the results were published in accordance to exam numbers.
