Uyinene Mrwetyana Remembered On What Would Have Been Her 21st Birthday

Uyinene Mrwetyana Remembered On What Would Have Been Her 21st Birthday. She may be gone, but she is definitely not forgotten. In August 2019, the unfortunate happened when 19 year old Uyinene Mrwetyana was raped and killed at the Clareinch Post Office before her body was dumped in Khayelitsha.

Post office worker Luyanda Botha arrested in connection with the rape and murder of UCT student. The 42-year-old was then handed three life sentences for the gruesome crime. In celebration of her life, the Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation was then founded. Uyinene was known to be inquisitive, forthright and vocal about the various social ills which plague our society, including patriarchal oppression and issues of gender-based violence. It is for this reason that the Foundation’s main aim is to empower young people to stand against violence.

Today is another milestone of Uyinene’s life which was cut short. Today she could be celebrating her 21st birthday. May people always look forward to their 21st, unfortunately for Uyinene’s family, this is a reminder for them that their lovely daughter is no more. She and the likes of Tshegofatso Pule, Naledi Phangindawo and Karabo Mokoena are among the many women in this country who have been brutally killed by men.
