Sol Phenduka Fired From Kaya FM

Kaya 959 has announced the immediate termination of breakfast show content provider Sol Phenduka’s contract, following what it describes as a serious breach of the station’s values and broadcasting standards.
In a statement released by the broadcaster, Acting Managing Executive Dave Tiltmann confirmed that the decision was made after an internal review of Phenduka’s recent public conduct.
“Kaya 959 cannot and will not condone comments made on the MacG Vodcast, where Sol Phenduka is an integral part of the presenting team. Misogynistic remarks made about actress Minnie Dlamini were unacceptable and inconsistent with respect owed to women,” said Tiltmann.
He emphasized that as a representative of the station’s flagship breakfast show, Phenduka’s conduct was out of alignment with Kaya 959’s values and what its audience expects.
This latest incident, Tiltmann added, was a material breach of Phenduka’s Independent Contractor Agreement, despite the broadcaster having previously raised concerns. In June 2023, Phenduka reportedly provided Kaya 959 with written assurances that such behavior would not be repeated. He also acknowledged his responsibilities, apologized to the Kaya family and stakeholders, and committed to upholding the station’s standards.
“Trust, integrity, accountability, respect, and inclusivity are the foundations of Kaya 959. They guide everything we do on air, online and off air. We are answerable to our listeners, and when conduct falls short, we act decisively,” Tiltmann said.
The station stressed that the termination was carried out in line with its Independent Contractor Agreement, which permits immediate dismissal when the actions of a public-facing individual damage Kaya 959’s reputation.
Kaya 959 concluded the statement by reaffirming its commitment to a safe, respectful, and inclusive working environment, backed by rigorous broadcasting standards and a culture of accountability across all platforms.
