Gayton McKenzie Steps In to Help Another Struggling Veteran Actor

Gayton McKenzie Steps In to Help Another Struggling Veteran Actor. It’s always sad to see individuals who have given so much to the creative industry struggle to get by. This has become a reality to so many of our actors, who live in poverty after gigs stop rolling in. Even some of those who get booked, also live from hand to mouth.

A few months back, the story of veteran actress Nandi Nyembe, touched many hearts. It came to light that Mam Nandi was not doing well health wise, and was currently using a wheelchair due to knee problems. She also experienced financial difficulties, as she exhausted her savings while helping her son. Mam’ Nandi has made it clear though that she was not seeking for handouts, but wanted work, so she ca take care of herself.

However, many people stepped in including the likes of Sana Mchunu and Gayton McKenzie. The Minister of Arts Sports and Culture called Mam’ Nandi, asking for her account number. He then promised that he is going to send her something just to sustain herself for now. After which, McKenzie, promised to personally visit her, and give her a permanent solution to all her problems. McKenzie also stated that he is doing this from his own personal finances, not from the ministry.

McKenzie is now on another case of a struggling veteran actor. He was tagged on a post that showed Glen Mabela’s current living state. Mabela is best known for his Uzalo role as Pastor Mdletshe. He also portrayed a young Shaka Zulu in the acclaimed 1986 mini-series Shaka Zulu. Over the years, he has built an impressive career with roles in Doubt, Erfsonders, Hopeville, Yizo Yizo, and My Brother’s Keeper. However, despite his contributions to the entertainment industry, Gabela has faced significant hardships, including financial struggles and personal setbacks.

Not getting gigs, meant financially, he was down and out. Gabela has lost many valuable assets including a car and an apartment. The financial strain left him dependent on a government social grant, a stark contrast to his once-thriving career. Now he is barely surviving, and battling mental health issues. With McKenzie stepping in, probably Gabela will get the help he wants.

“Thanks, will follow up and revert back today. This is extremely sad,” McKenzie said.
