Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng Shares A Cool Throwback As A University Student Over 4 Decades Ago. She doesn’t call herself Fab Academic for nothing. Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, not only advocates for education, she also took her studies very seriously.
A few years ago, the former University of Cape Town vice-chancellor professor got recognized for her amazing dedication on education. She won the inaugural Africa Education Medal, which recognizes the work of changemakers who transform education on the continent. Phakeng was chosen from 10 other finalists from across the continent including former Tanzanian president, Jakaya Kikwete.
To show that she comes from far with education, Phakeng always shares throwback content fro her school-going days. A few days back, she posted a picture of herself with another student as first years. This was at the University of Bophuthatswana. On the caption, Phakeng gave advice to first years students.
She is back again with another blast from the past. Phakeng has just posted another university throwback from 1984. She gave more tips to new students, which are avoiding romantic relationships with comrades, getting along with roommates and not worrying much about fashion.
“This right here was in 1984 second semester. Me in the middle (yes I have always has big hair), Daisy my roomie on the right and the girl on the left whose name I dont remember was a student at Vista Soweto & they were visiting Unibo. Here are 3 more tips for first years while they’re still enjoying Orientation week: – O SKA JOLA LE MA COMRADE!!!! – Get along with your roommate – Don’t worry about “drip”. Trust me, no one cares! Yours truly Deputy Mother,” she said.
