Thembisa Nxumalo Gushes Over Her Cool Role As Winnie Mandela. Congratulations are in order for Thembisa Nxumalo, with her iconic role. The award winning media personality and actress has been cast in The Cry of Winnie Mandela theatre production. The show makes its Cape Town debut today 29 January.
The Cry of Winnie Mandela, is based on Njabulo Ndebele’s celebrated novel of the same name. It has been adapted for the stage by Alex Burger and directed by the award-winning MoMo Matsunyane. The play ran at The Market Theatre for three weeks and was sold out and had to be extended by another two weeks, due to its overwhelming success. Now, The Cry of Winnie Mandela will play in Cape Town from 29 January to 15 February at 19:30 and Saturday matinees at 15:00.
Thembisa, plays Winnie Mandela. She is joined by other thespians Rami Chuene, Ayanda Sibisi, Siyasanga Papu, Les Made and Pulane Rampoana. In the play, four women meet to reflect, joined together by their anticipation of their husbands’ return. They lean on the heroism of Winnie Mandela and the connection they feel towards her. The women interrogate their own and other women’s reasons for waiting and what the wait did to them. This interrogation leads to a series of hearty, haunting and critical conversations, drawing audiences to reflect on the historical struggles of women, while drawing parallels to our own contemporary lives.
After its Cape Town debut, the production transfers back to The Market Theatre for a return season from 26 February to 23 March 2025.
