10 Ways to Survive A Pit Bull Attack
10 Ways to Survive A Pit Bull Attack. Pit bulls are friendly and affectionate dogs, but they can turn into fierce growling creatures in no time. Just this month alone there have been several pit bull attack incidents, which sadly ended up in deaths. The following tips can help you survive a pit bull attack, more so when you are by yourself.
1. Don’t Run
Stay exactly where you are If you think a dog is about to attack, don’t run. Predators are hard-wired to chase if their “prey drive” is triggered. The fact of the matter is, no matter how fast you are, you can’t out run it.
2. Show No Signs of Fear
This is easier said than done, but stand still. If you can, climb up or on to something high, such as a tree. Dogs can jump and some pit bulls can hop up as far as two metres, but they can’t climb.
3. Protect Larger Arteries and Veins
Pit bulls display a tenacity in fighting and will carry on attacking even if they have broken limbs and are bleeding. If you’ve got something to hand, such as an umbrella, extend it to give the dog something to attack. Try to stop the bite from going near your legs, face and neck.
4. Don’t Attempt to Pull Your Arm Out
When pit bulls attack, they cause damage to their prey with what’s called the “bite, hold and shake”. Try forcing your hand down into its throat to make it choke.
5. Try Not to Panic
Once the pit bull has got its teeth into your arm, it won’t let go. Try to stay upright as long as possible and, if you can, try to restrain the dog by putting your free arm around its neck.
6. Play Dead
If you fall or are knocked to the ground, curl into a ball with your hands over your ears and remain motionless. Try not to scream or roll around. When people roll up into this ball and don’t move, oftentimes the dogs lose interest.
7. Hold It By the Tail and Pull Backwards
Holding the Pit bull by the tail and pulling it is the most effective method. When you see a Pit bull biting another dog or a human, grab its tail and take them higher in the air. This technique will make most Pit bulls release their bite.
8. Use a Break Stick
A break stick is a plastic tool that you can use to release the bite of a Pit bull. When you put it in the Pit bull’s mouth and twist the stick, it will help unlock the jaws. Break sticks are useful for Pit bulls, but you should avoid using them on other dog breeds.
9. Move the Bitten Part Inside the Pit bull’s Mouth
If a Pit bull bites your arm or leg and no one’s around to help you release the bite, you’ll have to figure something out yourself. A better idea is to move your arm inside the dog’s mouth. If you try to pull out the arm, it may tear the muscles and cause severe bleeding. Instead, moving the arm in different directions will help loosen the dog’s grip, eventually making it release the bite.
10. Twist the Dog’s Collar
Twisting the Pit bull’s collar might also come in handy in some situations. By gripping the collar firmly, you can stop the air supply to the Pit bull’s lungs, which will make it leave the bite. Once the dog releases the bite, make sure to leave the collar as well.
