Levels! Dr Esther Mahlangu Bags Her 3rd Doctorate. If we talk about national treasures, Gogo Mahlangu is right there at the top. In 2018 Esther Mahlangu was honoured with a doctorate by the University of Johannesburg on for her contribution to the arts. From then on she assumed the identity of Dr Esther Mahlangu, thanks to her immense contribution to preserving the Ndebele culture through art.
Our iconic Gogo, started from humble beginnings, just by making Ndebele cultural paintings. Her arts got recognized locally and she soon reached international stardom. Dr Mahlangu has been recognized internationally with a number of iconic , including a painting on a boulevard in New York. She has also collaborated with international brands, such as BMW, Rolls Royce and American singer John Legend. Moreover Dr Mahlangu’s work has been featured at galleries across the globe, including Japan and France.
Dr Mahlangu might be almost 87 years of age, but there ain’t nothing stopping her. She joined the likes of award winning musician Yvonne Chaka Chaka, fashion designer David Tlale, and business tycoon Mike Nkuna, who were also conferred by TUT with honorary doctorates. This is the 3rd time our Gogo got honored with a doctorate, something that is iconic.
Gogo Mahlangu who was robbed and assaulted a couple of months ago, continues to be the epitome of resilience. She doesn’t let what happened to her, or her age stands on the way to reach more dreams, If this isn’t inspirational to any young and old person out there, we don’t know what is!
“Thank you to Tshwane University of Technology for the honour of my third honorary doctorate,” she said in gratitude.
