Lesedi Matsunyane On People Choosing to Believe Twitter Before Family Confirms News
Lesedi Matsunyane On People Choosing to Believe Twitter Before Family Confirms News. When it comes to breaking news, social media has always been faster than the mainstream media. Unfortunately being the first to break news also comes with risks. In some cases what is shared is not truthful, as we have seen with so many news breaking on social media.
Just recently there have bee fake news doing the rounds about the passing away of media personality, actor and singer Bonginkosi ‘Zola 7’ Dlamini as well as veteran actress, Lydia Mokgokoloshi. Well, this is nothing new, a lot of celebrities like Sophie Lichaba and the late Menzi Ngubane have also been victims of death hoaxes in the past.
Sadly, despite these huge blunders there are those people who still swear by social media when it comes to breaking news. Yes, sometimes they get it right as it has been the case with Shona Ferguson. News of his untimely passing was all over social media before the family could even confirm it.
His step daughter Lesedi Matsunyane, is not pleased at all by how now Twitter has become the place where newspapers and TV bloggers are trusted sources, before even getting the facts from those close to the subject.
“Twitter is the place where you’d sooner believe a newspapers and television bloggers to verify news… than to wait for the family members to deliver,” Lesedi said.
