7. The Cassper and AKA Beef
It’s been one of the longest and most fiercest public feuds in South African hip-hop history, The beef has seen both rappers release diss tracks aimed at each other this year. A lot of subliminal tweets on both rappers’ timelines were how the feud unrolled ever since. The two rappers once made peace earlier this year, but the beef surfaced again when AKA started dissing Cassper again on social media.
8. #Feesmustfall Campaign
#FeesMustFall is a student led protest movement that began in mid October 2015 in response to an increase in fees at South African universities. The protests also called for higher wages for low earning university staff who worked for private contractors such as cleaning services and campus security and for them to be employed directly by universities. Protests started at Wits and spread to UCT and Rhodes University before rapidly spreading to other universities across the country.
9. Trevor Noah’s “The Daily Show” gig
Trevor Noah is an international stand-up comedian who in 2015 was named host of ‘The Daily Show,’ succeeding Jon Stewart. South Africans celebrated Noah’s big step up, saying his talents will appeal to a global audience and he will change people’s perceptions of their country, which is still grappling with the legacy of apartheid-era human rights abuses. “Over the years, Mr Noah has proved that laughter is the best medicine and has helped our country and its people to find healing through laughing at themselves,” said Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa.
10. Cassper Nyovest dream to #Fillupthedome
Refiloe Maele, known as Cassper Nyovest, said he wants to fill the Ticketpro Dome with a capacity of 20,000 people to prove that a local artist can fill the northern Johannesburg venue. When he started talking about wishing to have the venue, which can carry about 20 000, filled to capacity, a lot of people thought he was out of his mind. The rapper filled up the dome as he said he would this past Saturday, becoming the first South African artist to do so without the help of an international act.
