This entry-level role provides hands-on experience in the safe and efficient handling of various train types, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger locomotives. Position Purpose

The Trainee Train Assistant works closely with the Train Driver to ensure smooth and safe train operations. You will assist with pre-trip preparations, coupling and uncoupling locomotives, monitoring train performance enroute, and supporting communication and safety protocols. This role is critical for maintaining train integrity, adherence to safety standards, and timely delivery of goods.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sign on duty and receive allocation of tasks for each shift
  • Prepare locomotives by checking and supplementing equipment, performing brake tests, and cleaning the working area
  • Assist with communication equipment setup, ensuring radios and telemeters are functional
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections and adhere to train working rules and roadworthiness standards
  • Execute shunting activities at sidings and enroute according to work orders
  • Support the Train Driver during emergencies or deviations, providing accurate feedback and assistance
  • Maintain records, complete train journals, and perform administrative duties as required
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and organizational policies

Qualifications and Requirements

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
  • Minimum height of 1.6 meters
  • Psychomotor ability, assessed via Vienna Testing System (VTS standards)
  • Physical fitness, including hearing, vision, and mental assessment through periodic medical surveillance
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and work shifts
  • Willingness to undergo theoretical and practical training to become a certified Train Assistant

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

Successful candidates should demonstrate knowledge of locomotive equipment, depot layouts, train handling rules, and shunting procedures. Key skills include:

  • Locomotive coupling, preparation, and driving skills (electrical and diesel)
  • Observation, spatial awareness, and depth perception
  • Stress management and problem-solving abilities
  • Effective communication and judgment
  • Time management, concentration, and adherence to safety protocols
