In a statement issued by the chairperson of Alex FM Isaac Mangena, 32-year-old Mbatha, who is affectionately known as DJ Jorontinah, was fatally shot while walking home from the station with two of his colleagues, Sammy Ramodike and Matome Mookanedi. They were stopped by about three gunmen at 7th Selbourne, who took their phones and shoes, before shooting Mbatha in the chest.

Mbatha succumbed to his wounds at Masakhane Clinic in Alexandra, around 9pm. According to reports at least five people, were shot in separate incidents on Thursday evening in Alexandra, northern Johannesburg.

“We are with his father and other family members now at the clinic. Station Manager is also with his team comforting each other.Let’s keep the family and Josh’s colleagues in our prayers. May his soul rest in peace. A promising career gone too soon. Funeral details and Memorial Service will be announced in due course after consultation with the family,” the statement reads.

Gauteng premier David Makhura said on Friday that at least seven other people were injured in these shootings.

“We are deeply disturbed and troubled by the increasing number of senseless killings of innocent residents. Criminals cannot hold our people at ransom in this manner. Violence and violent crime have no place in our society,” said Makhura in a media statement
