5 Reasons Mmusi Maimane Is Not So Popular Among Blacks. He is the leader of South Africa’s official opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA. A general election is essentially a popularity contest and it goes without saying that Mmusi Maimane’s struggles to win over the support of black mainstream politicians and black voters. The following facts might be real reasons why he is not so popular.
- He joined the DA in 2009 and was fast-tracked through its ranks to take control in 2015. This led to accusations that he was being used by the party’s senior white activists to cover up lack of reform within the party.
- Mmusi Maimane is not relatable with many black people. Many people regard him as a puppet of white people and a sell out. The fact that he worried a white woman also does not sit well with some.
- One reason also is that Maimane’s face is not printed on the DA T-shirts. This might look like a small thing, but blacks feel it’s a sign that white people shun them, and wont wear anything with a black face.
- Instead of prioritizing black people, since they are the most disadvantaged, Maimane feels every race deserves equal attention. This has led to many concluding he can’t represent them fairly.
- In 2015, shortly after being elected as DA leader, a video circulated on social media where Maimane seemingly referred to gay and Muslim people as “sinners”.
