Musa Sukwene On Overcoming Dyslexia
Former SA Idols winner Musa Sukwene is the latest celebrity to come forward with his struggle with the learning disability. Sukwene dealt with his dyslexia at an earlier age, which he says people associated it with being lazy. The “Mthande” singer opened up about how he struggled to read but says he worked extremely hard to overcome Dyslexia through music.
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that manifests primarily as a difficulty with written language, particularly with reading and spelling.
Although dyslexia is the result of a neurological difference, it is not an intellectual disability. Dyslexia occurs at all levels of intelligence, average, above average, and highly gifted.
“I was born Dyslexic. So all my life I had to put music as a priority to be able to read and write. ”
“Kids used to tease me but because I have such a strong personality, I managed to cover it up and at some point no one was able to see or know what was happening to me because I went home and worked extra hard. Listening to music to be able to speak and write”.
“Coming from a black family and they associated with laziness. They never believe that someone could be born and not know how to read”.
