The Fight Continues: The Night That Was The SONA
It didn’t take long before twitter exploded yesterday during the airing of the SONA 2015, from the crazy fashion statements, arrests, and everything else that went wrong, it was nothing short of drama, embarrassing moments that made us cringe, and everything we expected.
First it was the fashion, there were a few hits but mostly there were the usual misses. The social media did not waste any time comparing the outfits to animals and it was the best thing to watch. Here is our absolute favorite.
Then there was the saga of signal jamming. The defense minister Noziviwe Mapisa Nqukula said she wasn’t aware the signal to the National Assembly was jammed. The service was restored after chants from the opposition benches. Some members of the parliament were also angry because they didn’t have the correct password for parliament WIFI. Political analyst Richard Calland says it’s a breach of the right to freely interact with information and expression.
Before President Zuma could make any point, one of the EFF members interrupted the speech and wanted to know when the President would bring back the money he used for Nkandla and if he would use e-wallet to send the money. Baleka Mbethe was quick to remind all the EFF members that this was not the right time to ask the questions but for the President to deliver the state of the nation address. The EFF leader Julius Malema couldn’t hear any of that and insisted on wanting answers from the President. Mbethe then ordered the security to escort all the EFF out of the chamber in which other members thought it was not the right thing to do.
DA members were also seen walking out of the parliament. The parliament has become more of an entertainment platform that the main purpose. As much as we want to make fun of the situation, its also an embarrassing and disgraceful occasion.
