Economic Performance & Development (EPD) Fieldworkers
Introduction
The Economic Performance and Development (EPD) research programme of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) requires the services of 3 fieldwork supervisors on a short-term basis. The city of Johannesburg has appointed Human Sciences Research Council to conduct an Audit of Early Childhood Development Sites in selected wards with in the City of Johannesburg
EPD urgently needs to appoint 3 fieldwork supervisors for the duration of 30 days maximum.
Key Responsibilities
• Read and become familiar with the project documents and any other relevant background documents;
• Participate in training and briefing sessions in preparation for the fieldwork and in the execution of the fieldwork;
• Manage a team of between 10-12 CoJ fieldworkers who will conduct the audit study;
• Ensure that fieldwork teams are appropriately deployed to ECD sites as per sampling framework provided;
• Ensure that fieldworkers’ data collection instruments are in working order and safely maintained;
• Ensure that fieldworkers have sufficient airtime for submission of data transfer once collected;
• Provide on the spot problem-solving support to fieldworkers;
• Ensure that fieldworkers accurately document and record interviews;
• Collect signed consent forms from Fieldworkers for each and every interview conducted. Submit the signed forms to the EPD Project Manager;
• Review and assess on a daily basis whether fieldworkers are accurately capturing data and rectify an missing data or inaccurate data collection;
• Ensure the timeous submission of digital records of completed questionnaires of all interviews conducted;
• Timeously identify problems with fieldwork and report to the EPD Project Manager and undertake jointly agreed remedial actions to address problems;
• Ensure that fieldworkers submit daily control sheets;
• Attendance and participation in debriefing and data analysis sessions (where applicable);
• Ensure that all fieldworkers strictly comply with the HSRC Research Ethics throughout the information collection process;
• Adhere to ethical conduct during the course of the study;
• Submit a brief report at the close of the field work which will provide details of interviews conducted and reflection on the fieldwork.
Key Requirements
• Previous field work experience ( at least 1year experience);
• Fluency in isiZulu is a key requirement for this contract;
• Residence in Gauteng or ability to travel to Gauteng at own cost for this assignment;
• Flexibility and willingness to learn how to work across different socio-economic development themes;
• Have access to a laptop;
• Valid driver’s license a preference;
• High personal motivation, self-management, and detail-orientation;
• Strong spoken and written communication skills;
• Articulate and tactful communications skills;

The fieldwork is expected to run between October 2014 and November 2014 and flexibility around these dates is required.
