1. They Are Not New
Yes, surprise… You may think that e-cigarettes are the newest fad method to help people give up smoking, but the concept has been around for a while! Herbert A. Gilbert came up with and copywrited the original concept back in 1963. The Chinese manufacturer “Hon Lik” developed the modern e-cigarette in 2002.
2. They Are Big Business
There is apparently big money in the e-cigarette business, with sales of over $1 billion in America in 2013, according to Forbes. Andries Verleur which is the co-founder of V2 Cigs, said that, assuming that technology continues to innovate, in 10 to 15 years electronic cigarettes will be “the replacement to big tobacco.”
3. They Do Not Generate Smoke
Most people don’t know that when smoking, the biggest problem is not the nicotine, but rather the smoke you are inhaling, which contains hazardous substances, including tar and carbon monoxide. E-cigarettes seek to resolve this problem by delivering nicotine without smoke. They do this by vaporizing liquid that contains nicotine.
4. Liquid Can Be Flavoured
The e-cigarette heats up a cartridge that contains liquid, creating vapour, which the user then inhales. It is possible for the liquid in the cartridges to be flavoured, so rather than getting a nicotine hit that tastes like smoke, you can get a nicotine fix that tastes like brownies, chocolate, or fruit.
5. They Have Adjustable Nicotine
E-cigarettes use replaceable cartridges, and the cartridges contain different quantities of nicotine. This allows the user to directly control nicotine intake and slowly reduce the amount. For example, you can start with a 24-mg dose, and then go down to 14 mg or 8 mg.
6. It Is a Growing Industry
In 2013, some business analysts suggested that the e-cigarette industry is growing strongly, with consumption expected to continue increasing. Bloomberg Industries predicted that e-cigarette sales would pass traditional cigarette sales by the year 2047.
7. Safer for Those Around You
Smoking traditional cigarettes is not only harmful to you; second-hand smoke is also harmful to the people around you. With an e-cigarette, there is no second-hand smoke, so there is no risk to the people nearby when you are using one. If you start using one in a no-smoking area, you may get some odd looks, though.
8. They Can Be Advertised on TV
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) banned advertising traditional cigarettes on television in 1971. However, the FCC does not have a problem with e-cigarettes being advertised on television. In some states, it is even legal for minors to buy e-cigarettes… which I don’t think is as harmless as they think it might be.
9. Uncertain Chemicals in the Vapour
Cigarette smoke contains thousands of substances, including 69 that cause cancer. Theoretically, replacing that smoke with vapour puts the user at a much lower risk of cancer and lung disease. While vapour contains fewer substances than smoke, it is uncertain what harmful substances there are in various brands.
10. E-Cigs May Not Help You Quit
Manufacturers deem e-cigarettes as a way to help quit smoking traditional cigarettes. However, the World Health Organization made a statement in July 2013 to say that there had been no scientific demonstration of the efficacy of electronic cigarettes as an aid to giving up smoking. But nonetheless these e-cigarettes are indeed a safer, healthier alternative to smoking tabacco.
