What Is Pap Smear?

Gynecologists are always advising ladies to do a pap smear. There are always uncertainties around the subject because people really don’t know what the procedure entails. The Department of health describes pap smear as a quick, painless test used to detect early cell changes in the neck of the womb, which may later progress to cancer. Cancer does not develop suddenly in the cells. There is a gradual change from normal, through various levels of abnormality, through pre-cancer and eventually to cancer. This whole process can take many years. A pap smear is recommended for every woman because it can prevent the development of cancer and can detect cancer at an early stage.
