Job Overview
The Trainee Train Assistant role focuses on supporting the Train Driver in the safe operation of freight trains and locomotives. You will assist with train preparation, coupling and uncoupling of wagons, communication checks, and safety inspections before and during trips. The role also includes shunting operations, monitoring train movement, and responding to operational instructions along the route. You will play a critical support role in ensuring freight reaches its destination safely, on time, and in compliance with rail safety standards. This position requires physical fitness, attention to detail, and strong adherence to procedures.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist the Train Driver with safe operation of freight and passenger trains
• Prepare locomotives before departure and complete safety checks
• Conduct brake tests and ensure train roadworthiness
• Handle coupling and uncoupling of wagons where required
• Perform shunting activities in sidings and yards
• Check and maintain communication equipment
• Monitor train movement and observe signals during travel
• Assist in emergency situations and incident response procedures
• Complete train journals and operational documentation
• Follow strict safety procedures and rail operating rules
• Report deviations, delays, and incidents to the Train Driver
• Assist with administrative duties related to train operations
• Ensure compliance with Health and Safety Act requirements
Requirements And Skills
• Grade 12 with Mathematics and or Physical Science
• Minimum age and medical fitness compliance as per Transnet requirements
• Ability to meet psychomotor and safety assessment standards
• Physically fit and able to handle heavy tasks
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to follow instructions accurately
• Good observation and attention to detail
• Ability to work shifts, weekends, and irregular hours
• Strong focus on safety and compliance
• Ability to remain alert under pressure
• Basic understanding of logistics or rail operations is an advantage
• Willingness to complete full trainee training and certification
