Front Shop Assistant Fixed Term Opportunity at Dis-Chem Gauteng

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking Front Shop Assistants for Gauteng stores for the December period. This fixed-term role focuses on maintaining merchandising standards and delivering excellent customer service at the point of sale. The position offers practical retail experience and exposure to a professional pharmacy retail environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all products are on shelves and neatly presented at all times
- Monitor stock for sell-by dates and restock merchandise as needed
- Handle customer queries about out-of-stock items and follow up promptly
- Store and pack delivered stock accurately and efficiently
- Maintain correct merchandise displays, labels, and pricing; report discrepancies
- Keep the storeroom organized, clean, and tidy
- Stay updated on new product knowledge to assist customers effectively
- Assist with back shopping and restocking to maximize sales
- Process purchases, including cash, cards, vouchers, and loyalty cards
- Handle merchandise returns and exchanges under management authorization
- Ensure accurate cash management, including drop safes and till reconciliation
- Follow stock rotation procedures and report low, damaged, or expired stock
- Participate in stocktaking and maintain accurate stock files
- Assist with loading and off-loading of stock and ensure boxes are flattened after unpacking
- Build professional relationships with customers and provide courteous assistance
- Report customer feedback, compliments, complaints, and suspicious behavior to management
- Maintain housekeeping standards and adhere to Health and Safety regulations
- Comply with Dis-Chem policies, uniform, and personal appearance standards
Skills and Competencies
Essential:
- Knowledge of retail operations and administration
- Problem-solving and ability to escalate issues appropriately
- Basic arithmetic skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Clear verbal communication
- Ability to follow procedures and take personal responsibility for work quality
Advantageous:
- Basic computer skills including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Numerical skills and familiarity with SAP
Requirements
- Grade 12 – Matric or Senior Certificate
- 0–6 months retail experience; 1 year advantageous
- Certification in Retail Business Management is a plus
- Ability to work retail hours and South African citizenship
- No criminal record and clear credit rating
- Driver’s license and reliable transport
