“In the Real World Grades Aren’t the Only Measure of Value,” Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng. She always advocates for education, and takes time to celebrate students’ achievements. Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng attends graduations ceremonies and hypes students during their studying as well as when they write exams.
The former University of Cape Town Vice Chancellor also leads by example. A few years ago, Professor Phakeng got recognized for her amazing dedication on education. She won the inaugural Africa Education Medal, which recognizes the work of changemakers who transform education on the continent. Phakeng was chosen from 10 other finalists from across the continent including former Tanzanian president, Jakaya Kikwete.
Although, she is big on education, she is also realistic. The other day she took to X, stating that there are more things that can open doors, besides grades. Professor Phakeng cited connections, background practical skills as some of he things that can take a person far. She thus encouraged students to develop interpersonal communication, with all sorts of people, and work on the skills they have, or wish to have.
“Getting good grades at school or post-school is important and may open doors. However, in the real world, grades aren’t the only measure of value. Connections, background, and practical skills often surpass academic performance. So, make sure you develop relationships with others who are not necessarily like you, come from different countries/contexts/culture and always check what skills you have or are developing. #KgethiSpeaks #DeputyMotherOnDuty,” she said.
