Sad Note: Veteran Actress Meme Ditshego Passes Away. On yet another sad note, the South African entertainment industry loses one of its iconic stars. The nation is mourning Meme Ditshego who sadly passed on the evening of 25 June, aged 60.
The SAFTA winnig radio and TV actress died after a short illness in hospital and, as of yet the cause of death has not been shared. Mama Ditshego’s conditioned worsened over the past weekend and she passed away last night. Her talent agency, Eye Media Artists announced her passing in a statement on Thursday.
“It is with deep sorrow and reverence that we announce the passing of Meme Ditshego – a beloved South African actress, legendary comedic talent and a true veteran of our screen and stage,” Eye Media Artists shared.

Ditshego started her acting career in township theatre, where she performed in a number of plays. Her TV debut came in 1997 with SABC2’s Afrikaans drama series Sterk Skemer in which she had the role of Elsie. She also appeared as Ma Thandi in SABC1’s Soul Buddys. In SABC3’s Jozi-H hospital drama series she was Gladys and was Ausi Ntsoaki in SABC2’s Muvhango. She was also cast in SABC2’s Kompleks. Ditshego also had a role in M-Net’s comedy series The Coconuts.
For six years, she played Josephine in SABC2’s comedy series Ga Re Dumele. The role won her the Best Actress Golden Horn trophy at the South African Film and TV Awards in 2012. For the same role she was nominated again for a Safta in the same category in 2014.
Ditshego has also been on major shows such as Safe asHauser’s, Geraamtes in die Kas, Zabalaza, Imposter, Broken Vows and Ak’siSpaza. Other TV shows include Erfsondes, Die Uwe Pottie Potgieter, The Mating Game. Ditshego has also starred on films, Alles Wat Mal Is, Skorokoro, and Love, Sex and 30 Candles. Some of her most recent shows are Cobrizi, Entangled and Giyani – Land of Blood.
